Nestled in between Colombia to the north and Peru to the south(and east) and only containing a land mass equal to the state of Colorado, Ecuador holds over 15% of the worlds bird species and 10% of the tree species!!!
No fewer than 24 eco-zones exist including mangroves, dry forest, cloud forest, lowland Amazon rainforest, and high paramo. With the Andes splitting the country in two from north to south and the Napo River running the width of it from the Andes Mountains to Peru, a half dozen different habitats can be birded only 1 1/2 hours from Quito in any direction.
With a half dozen world class lodges so close, 350 species in a weeks time is a very realistic goal. Many of the 118 species of Tanagers and 120 species of hummingbirds would keep a birder busy for months.
